My Why: Literacy is a Civil Right
"I've taken the stairs- building strength, endurance, and resiliency. These are the same qualities our children bring. It is up to us to help them navigate their own set of stairs until they are able to navigate them on their own."
Education didn't just change my life—it saved it. I grew up navigating the realities of homelessness, inspired by my Head Start teachers, and later living in subsidized housing. I graduated from an urban high school where resources were limited, but hope and determination were abundant. Through it all, my mother was my anchor and education my launching pad. It led me to earn a degree from Denison University and later a M.Ed. in Elementary Education from The Ohio State University (at the time, one of the top ten ranked programs in the nation). These experiences didn't just shape who I am—they ignited a passion to ensure every child, regardless of background, has access to the same life-changing opportunities. Education opens doors, breaks cycles, and empowers futures. I'm living proof of that truth!
This is why I advocate for students who, like me, need teachers who believe in them. I know the power of an invested educator and the impact of high expectations. It's this deep, personal understanding that drives my work and fuels my commitment to equity and excellence. This is why I serve in the role of an educator—to champion students, support teachers and school leaders, and lead systems that create opportunities for every child to thrive.
