Behind every percentage, test score, and statistic lies not just a number, but a child with unique dreams, challenges, and potential waiting to be unlocked. When we celebrate a 5% increase in literacy scores, we're witnessing dozens of children discovering the magic in books for the first time. When attendance rises, we're seeing students who have found a classroom where they feel valued, safe, and excited to learn.
Each data point tells a deeper individual human story - perhaps of the shy kindergartener who finally raised his hand, or the striving reader who conquered her very first chapter book, or the middle-schooler who found confidence after intensive literacy support to read aloud with pride.
As we analyze charts and spreadsheets, let's commit to seeing the human faces behind the figures. Every data point represents a child's educational journey—their obstacles overcome, their breakthroughs celebrated, and the doors of opportunity that have opened for their future. This is the true measure of our work.

High-Impact Teaching and Leadership Development
Avalon Elementary School: Classroom Excellence and Teacher Leadership
Combined Classroom Approach
From 2010 to 2012, a combined second and third grade classroom was structured to pair high-performing second graders with third graders facing significant academic challenges.
Remarkable Results
13 out of 16 third-grade studentsachieved proficiency on the state assessment during the first year of implementation.
Sustained Success
This high level of academic achievement was successfully maintained into the following school year.
From 2012 to 2014, I transitioned into the role of literacy coach at Avalon, the same school where the combined class had been taught. During this period, the school met key growth and progress targets, maintaining the strong academic momentum established in previous years.
Douglas Alternative: Classroom Excellence
High Expectations Environment
Driven by a commitment to defy the odds, my classroom environment prioritized academic excellence and high expectations for all students. These young minds were challenged to not only succeed but to thrive—competing academically with peers across urban, suburban, and rural settings.
Lasting Impact
Although Douglas Elementary closed its doors in 2010, the impact of its academic growth endured. That classroom produced future entrepreneurs, nurses, and business leaders (whom I still keep in contact with today)—living proof of what was possible when belief and rigor met opportunity.
In 2010, despite the devastation surrounding the school's closure, the third-graders at Douglas—led by a single teacher in a high-needs building—rose to the occasion. That year, third graders ended on a high note, with students overcoming challenges and finishing strong, exceeding the district by nearly 10% in reading and coming within 5% in math.
(I taught third grade at Douglas with one other teacher from 2005-Spring of 2009. Additional records can be found here.)
